The Grand Valley Mathematics Association (GVMA) is a volunteer organization whose goal is to promote excellence in Mathematics Education. This is achieved through professional development conferences, seminars, research and publications, student competitions, and scholarships. The Association endeavours to facilitate interaction among teachers and teacher candidates at elementary, secondary and tertiary levels.

Award Description Kenneth D. Fryer was for many years an Associate Dean in the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo, author of many secondary school and university textbooks, promoter and popularizer of mathematics, a wonderful public speaker, and a strong advocate for communication among mathematics educators at all levels. In memory of Professor Fryer, the Grand Valley Mathematics Association has established the Kenneth D. Fryer GVMA Award. This award is given annually to recognize a secondary mathematics department in the GVMA region that:  fosters collegiality, teamwork, and excellent classroom teaching contributes to the overall development of students demonstrates leadership in the mathematics education community.

Value of Award

The value of the award will be $250 in the form of a gift certificate to attend the GVMA fall conference.  This award shall take effect from the date it is announced and used in part or whole for a period of three consecutive years thereafter.

Eligibility

The Mathematics Department must be from a school within the GVMA region.

Nomination Process

Complete the nomination form and write a nomination letter outlining the reasons to consider a mathematics department for this award.  Use the criteria in the three bulleted items above as guides.  GVMA encourages nominators to go beyond these guidelines with other relevant information when appropriate.  We welcome supporting documentation from principals, teachers, students, parents, and those in leadership roles such as mathematics consultants.

Please create a single PDF of the nomination form and nomination letter together with the supporting documents.  Attach this to an email. “KD Fryer nomination” will be the subject field, and send it no later than May 1st.

Selection

The GVMA Executive Committee will choose the recipient.  The department head and school principal will be notified prior to the GVMA Fall Conference.  The award will be presented at the GVMA Fall Conference
